Spirit of Christ Usher MinistryOur mission is that of hospitality. Our service is making parishioners and guests feel welcome and comfortable as we gather for our Eucharistic celebration. The ministry of ushers is the oldest lay ministry in the Catholic Church. The ushers of today have descended from a long line of people of God who have gone before them. During the time of Christ, the doorkeepers of the temple numbered in the hundreds and were the forerunners of today's ushers. Today's ushers have a number of very important duties. We welcome people into the church and escort them to a seat as required. During the service, we are available to handle accidents or emergencies. At the proper time, we go down the aisles where we are stationed and take up the collection. We select the family or group for the presentation of the gifts at the Offertory and direct the flow of traffic during Communion. When the Mass is over, we hand out the bulletins and any other handouts and answer questions. Following Mass, we pick up any items left in the pews and tidy up the portable chairs so that the Church is ready for the next Mass. Ushering is an opportunity to serve God by serving His people, and is a marvelous way to actively and faithfully participate in the functioning of Spirit of Christ Catholic Community. This ministry allows us to begin to grow and to continue to serve in a very important role for the Church. Good ushers are “people-persons” who make people coming into the church feel welcome and appreciated. In doing so, ushers contribute greatly to making everyone’s Church experience a positive one. Ushers go out of their way to brighten a person’s day and to be a blessing to everyone they meet. This ministry is open to all parishioners; men and women; senior citizens, parents and teenagers. Ushers are always needed! For a small commitment of time – usually just one Mass per month - you can provide an important service by setting a welcoming tone for our parish. Interested in becoming an usher but not sure you have time? Here’s what’s involved: you would need to be at Church approximately 15 minutes before Mass starts and stay until most of the congregation has left and the pews are straightened up. The only thing you need to bring to the job is a willingness to provide service. The team Usher Captain usually handles training of individual ushers. If we have several new ushers, a special training session will be conducted. Updates to procedures or special requirements at Masses are handled by posting notices in the usher room or making phone calls to the Usher Captains.
