Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic, Family, Fraternal Service organization that was founded in 1882 by Father Michael McGivney based on the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism.

To this end, the Knights share their talents and time in vigorous programs of service in the areas of Church, Council, Youth, Family, Community, and Pro-Life.

The Spirit of Christ Knights of Columbus Council seeks to first serve the pastor with any of his needs within the parish. These may range from arranging parish picnics and other large events to small projects. Council 12979 also serves the needs of the parish’s other priests and deacons along with the interests of the many Spirit of Christ committees.

Every year our Spirit of Christ Knights of Columbus Council 12979 participates in a large number of activities within the parish and the community. These vary from sponsoring events like family oriented picnics and Christmas parties, moving the homeless from their week’s stay at Spirit of Christ to another church, cleaning trash from a section of Wadsworth Boulevard, and conducting baseball and softball camps for grammar school youths.

We also support Pro-Life programs and prayer sessions against abortion at Planned Parenthood, conduct traffic control on Palm and Easter Sundays, and sponsor pancake and burrito breakfasts and Lenten fish fries. The council also supports the handicapped through our tootsie roll drive and the overnight camping program.

Our council quite obviously shares and engages in the spirit of charity through limited financial support of select groups and young missionaries and in charity through many hours of volunteerism.

Young men and women, who are working with collegiates on several campuses helping them to strengthen their Catholic faith, are assisted financially by the council. We also support seminarians with monetary gifts at Christmas and Easter, providing these men with assistance with their personal needs at these times of the year.

The Knights also have an opportunity for several men’s retreats throughout the year.
